Today,
Saturday 9th April, Tom Solomon was named
"The BBC Radio 2 Voice of Musical
Theatre 2005"
after an international competition
amongst hundreds of professional singers from around the
world culminated in a spectacular Gala
Final featuring six contestants at Cardiff's
New Theatre.

The first
winner of the contest in 2000, Laura Michelle
Kelly,

Laura Michelle
Kelly
has gone from
one success to another - she is currently playing the title
role in Mary Poppins in the
West End.
An original
200 or so professional performers from around the world were
auditioned for the 2005 event.
Some of the countries
represented in the final elimination stages in Cardiff
were
Australia
Canada
Denmark
Estonia
Israel
New Zealand
Norway
United Kingdom
United States of America
The five semi-final judges
were Donald Pippin, Shaun Kerrison, Mary
Hammond, Ken Bruce and Mike Dixon.
Tom won his semi-final,
which clinched his automatic place in the Gala
Final.
Six contestants took part in
the Gala Final, each performing three
numbers.
The final was presented by
Ken Bruce on BBC Radio
2.

and Aled Jones (BBC TV
& Radio) and Mary King (Channel
4's Musiciality & Operatunity) on
BBC 1 Wales and
Sky TV.

The five Gala
Final judges were Lewis Carnie, Ken Caswell, Mary Hammond, Julia
McKenzie, Gareth Valentine.
The judges admitted they had
a tough job. One of the star
names on the panel, actress Julia McKenzie,
said: "There were rivers of
blood, it was very close and
literally came down to one point."
As well as the title, Tom
collected a cash prize and
BBC broadcast engagements, including Friday Night Is Music
Night.
